18 Years Ago this October…
For the past 18 years Ronald McDonald House Auckland has been doing it’s very best to keep kiwi families stronger together. It’s going to be a time of celebration for us here at the house, as we are so proud to have supported over 12,000 amazing families over the years. It has been an incredible journey for the House, its staff, supporters and all of the families that we support.
Our story began on October 25th 1994 with the construction of ten bedrooms in the Auckland Domain, resulting from a collaboration of those who saw the importance of providing a place for families to be supported together while their children stayed in Starship, the National Children’s Hospital.
Eveline Berry, mother of the young girl Antoinette who cut the ribbon at the House’s opening ceremony shared with the media her difficult experience of trying to be there for her daughter while staying at the hospital; “It’s very hard when you’re trying to care for a sick child far from home, coping with an unknown hospital and unknown systems in an unfamiliar city. Somewhere where you could have privacy, a place to relax and a comfortable bed to sleep in would just be wonderful”.
We’ve come a long way in the past 18 years, having grown from one building with a capacity of 10 families to three buildings that can hold around 80! One of the things we’re most proud of is the fact that we’ve never turned a referred family away – ensuring that even when our House is full, they have a place to stay and be there for each other. Over years this has amounted to more than 12,000 families. The next few weeks will see the House, our families and our supporters celebrating all that we’ve achieved in the past 18 years, and all that we will achieve in the years to come. Achievements that wouldn’t be possible without the contributions of the incredibly generous people, businesses and groups that understand the importance of what we do here at RMHA.
