Stronger - Together
Children battling serious medical conditions or injuries need their families close to help them heal. The House benefits the community at large as research has shown that families who remain together with their hospitalised child will be better placed to find strength and cope.
Accommodation and Support
Ronald McDonald House Auckland provides accommodation and a wide support programme which seeks to alleviate the practical, emotional and financial strains placed on a family when they need to travel to Starship Hospital:
- Practical Assistance: We provide quality accommodation, only minutes away from the hospital, for the whole family (siblings, grandparents, carers etc.). In addition to a private room, we provide a range of amenities to help with the practicalities of day-to-day life, including fully-equipped kitchens, an on-site school and children’s play areas
- Emotional Support: Our Houses offer families a caring, supportive environment and the opportunity to have an as normal daily routine as possible. Living alongside other families who are in similar situations provides an additional support network for parents and children alike
- Financial Relief: Our service is provided free to all families. We understand that the upheaval of relocating to Auckland is not only emotionally difficult, but for many it is also financially tough. Our House removes the financial burden of hotels and other associated expenses.
Who we helped in 2011:
- In 2011 we accommodated over 2000 families
- That's over 23,000 room nights
- Our family room averaged 3000 visits per month - over 35,000 visits across the year
- Our yearly occupancy is increasing; there was a 10% increase of total occupancy from 2009-2011
- Our families came from all over New Zealand.
